A golf glove is a small piece of kit that does an important job, giving you grip and control of the club and protecting your hand from blisters and rubbing. The right glove fits like a second skin, so you barely notice it is there. At Tony Valentine Golf we stock golf gloves from the world's leading brands, including FootJoy, Callaway, Cobra, and Under Armour.
Below you will find everything you need to choose with confidence, from which hand to wear a glove on to getting the right size, material, and a glove for wet weather.
A golfer wears a glove on their lead hand, the hand at the top of the grip. For a right-handed golfer that is the left hand, and for a left-handed golfer it is the right hand. The lead hand does most of the work holding the club, so that is where the glove provides grip and protection. Most golfers wear a single glove, though some prefer to wear two, particularly in cold or wet weather.
Fit is everything with a golf glove. It should feel snug like a second skin, with no loose material across the palm or at the fingertips, as excess fabric reduces your feel and grip. The fingers should reach the end of the glove without being cramped, and the fastening should close comfortably without straining. A glove that is too big bunches and wears out faster, while one too small feels restrictive and can tear.
Gloves come in standard and cadet sizes, with cadet sizes cut for shorter fingers and a wider palm. If a standard glove fits your palm but the fingers feel too long, a cadet size is likely the better fit. Sizing varies a little between brands, so if you are unsure our team in store can help you find the right size and cut.
Premium gloves use soft cabretta leather, prized for its exceptional feel and grip, moulding to your hand for a superb connection to the club. The trade-off is that leather is less durable and does not love getting wet, so it wears faster with heavy use. Synthetic gloves are more hard-wearing, more affordable, and cope better with moisture, while stretchy synthetic panels are often combined with leather to add durability and flex where it is needed.
Many gloves blend the two, using leather on the palm for feel and synthetic on the back and fingers for stretch and longevity. If feel is your priority, full cabretta leather is hard to beat. If durability and value matter more, an all-synthetic or hybrid glove is a sensible, longer-lasting choice.
In the wet, ordinary gloves lose their grip, which is where rain gloves come in. Made from materials that actually grip better when damp, they are worn as a pair and are a genuine help on rainy rounds. For cold weather, winter gloves are worn as a pair too, with thermal materials to keep your hands warm so you can still feel and control the club. Keeping a pair of each in your bag means you are ready whatever the British weather does.
You wear a glove on your lead hand, the one at the top of the grip. For right-handed golfers that is the left hand, and for left-handed golfers it is the right hand. The lead hand controls the club most, so that is where the glove gives grip and protection. Most golfers wear one glove, though some wear two in cold or wet conditions.
A golf glove should fit snugly like a second skin, with no loose material across the palm or at the fingertips and the fingers reaching the end without being cramped. Too big and it bunches and reduces feel; too small and it restricts and tears. If a standard glove fits your palm but the fingers are too long, try a cadet size, which is cut for shorter fingers.
It depends on what you value. Cabretta leather gloves offer the best feel and grip but are less durable and dislike getting wet. Synthetic gloves are more hard-wearing, more affordable, and handle moisture better. Many gloves combine both for feel and longevity. Choose leather for feel, synthetic for durability and value, or a hybrid for a balance of the two.
Yes. Rain gloves are made from materials that grip better the wetter they get, unlike standard gloves that go slippery in the rain. Worn as a pair, they keep you in control of the club through a wet round. They are one of the most useful additions to a bag for golfers who play whatever the weather.
If you would like help finding the right glove, size, or fit, our team is happy to advise. Browse our full range below, or get in touch and visit us in store at our Corsham or Swindon centre.
